Preventive Care for Growing Smiles

Children’s dentistry focuses on keeping teeth healthy, finding problems early and helping families develop manageable home-care habits. Depending on your child’s age, dental development and cavity risk, a visit may include:

  • Dental cleanings and exams to check teeth, gums and developing smiles.
  • Dental X-rays when needed to evaluate concerns that are not visible during an exam.
  • Fluoride treatment to help strengthen enamel and reduce cavity risk.
  • Dental sealants to help protect grooves in back teeth.
  • Guidance on brushing, cleaning between teeth and food and drink choices.

If we find a cavity or another concern, we explain the findings and discuss whether treatment can be provided here or whether your child needs a pediatric specialist.

Experience Behind Your Child’s Care

Both Dr. Lauren Atwell and Dr. Jaby Paul began practicing dentistry in 2011 and completed general practice residencies in 2012. Dr. Atwell trained at Montefiore Medical Center, and Dr. Paul trained at The Brooklyn Hospital Center.

Dr. Atwell received the Carroll Bennett Award for Pediatric Dentistry and has completed continuing education in children’s dental care. Since 2019, she has also served as director of operating room services for Montefiore Medical Center’s general practice residency, supervising and teaching 30 residents each year. Her hospital work informs her approach to reviewing medical histories and planning care around individual needs.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Visit

We begin by discussing your child’s health history, previous dental experiences and any symptoms or questions. Our dentists evaluate oral health and explain recommended care in language your family can understand. The visit is also a chance to discuss home care and the timing of future appointments.

Tell us if your child has difficulty with dental visits or has additional support needs. Understanding these concerns helps us determine whether our office is the right setting for care.

Questions About Children’s Dental Care

Are your dentists pediatric specialists?

Our providers are general dentists who offer children’s dental care within the scope of a family practice. A pediatric dentist has additional specialty training. If your child needs services or behavioral support beyond what we provide, we will discuss a specialist referral.

When should my child first see a dentist?

The American Dental Association recommends a first dental visit within six months of the first tooth appearing and no later than the first birthday. Call our office to discuss your child’s age and needs so we can help identify the appropriate setting for that visit.

Do you provide sedation or all types of pediatric treatment?

We do not provide pediatric sedation, stainless steel crowns or pulpotomies in our office. Children who need those treatments, more extensive care or additional behavioral support may need a pediatric specialist.

Can I bring my child in for a toothache or dental injury?

Call 914-948-5701 promptly and describe the symptoms or injury. Our team can advise you on the next step and appointment availability. Learn more about our emergency dental care.
